Cooking from my pantry has yielded some surprises in the deep pockets of the cupboard. Forgotten sauces, spices and beans remind me how easy it is to waste food. As I dive deep to rescue these forgotten treasures, I rely on easy, classic recipes that have been used throughout the decades.
This simple bean recipe has probably been used for centuries and once you make it once, you will never need another bean recipe. This recipe is hands off thanks to my favorite kitchen appliance, the slow cooker.
How to Make Simple Southern Beans
- Soak the beans over night.
- Choose and chop your aromatics such as onion and garlic.
- Add broth or broth substitutes and smoked meat or smoked bones such as hocks and shoulders.
- Spice it up!
- Garnish as desired.

Embrace the simple bean. It is a blank canvas that can be transformed Into Southern Beans, Mexican Beans or Refried Beans. Serve with an easy Butter Naan bread or a Traditional Southern Cornbread.

Slow Cooker Southern Beans
Create this classic Southern bean recipe in your slow cooker with just a few ingredients in this traditional recipe. A recipe so simple, once you make it, you will never need the recipe again.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups beans such as Great Northern, Cannellini, red, black etc.
- 1/2 onion, diced
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1/2 Tbs Creole seasoning
- Smoked pork bones such as ham hocks, smoked shoulder bone etc.
- 2 cups of low sodium broth (chicken, beef or veggie)
- salt & pepper to taste
Instructions
- Cover beans in water and soak over night.
- Discard water, rinse beans and place in a slow cooker.
- Add onions, garlic, creole spice, bones and broth.
- Cook on low for for eight hours or high for 6 hours.
- Check for seasoning and add salt or pepper as needed.
Notes
- Make this vegetarian or vegan by changing up the broth and adding liquid smoke instead of using smoked bones.
