Homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte in Two Minutes

How to make your own signature Pumpkin Spice Latte, espresso and milk highlighted by flavor notes of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and clove to create this incredible beverage that’s a fall favorite. No espresso maker, milk frother, or special syrups required.

“Coffee is a beverage that puts one to sleep when not drank.” – Alphonse Allais

Every afternoon of every day I have a choice, eat lunch and get sleepy or skip it and live with hunger.

The American culture doesn’t recognize the need for a siesta after lunch.  This is a great marketing opportunity for Starbucks, they have a Happy Hour rewards program if you buy a beverage in the morning and come back after 3pm.

I do indulge in a siesta whenever my schedule allows.  It is not always possible though and that is where my afternoon high tea comes in.  Before 4pm I indulge in either a cuppa or a fika.

Cuppa is literally a cup of tea, often times with friends.  A fika is a Swedish coffee break, often times with friends.  The idea behind both the cuppa and the fika is the same.  An afternoon pick-me-up when energy levels are low.  If you have good company to share in this daily ceremony, then it’s even a more merrier event than partaking solo.  Solo cuppa and fika have their place too.  Consider it a 15 minute mini meditation time.

I am sharing my recent invention with you friends.  It takes two minutes, a coffee mug and a microwave.

You will need to mix up some Pumpkin Spice beforehand but this is easy and will make your fika simple and delicious.

A cup of coffee with a spoonful of pumpkin spice.

Homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte in Two Minutes

Yield: 1 mug
Prep Time: 2 minutes
Cook Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 7 minutes

How to make your own signature Pumpkin Spice Latte, espresso and milk highlighted by flavor notes of pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove to create this incredible beverage that's a fall favorite. No espresso maker, milk frother, or special syrups required.

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbs of instant espresso powder
  • 1/4 tsp pumpkin spice
  • 1.5 cups of milk (365g), or enough to fill your coffee mug.  I use 2% but you can use whatever you want.
  • sugar as desired, I use 1 tsp but you could use more if you like a sweet latte

Instructions

  1. Place all ingredients in a coffee mug and stir well.
  2. Microwave on high for 1 1/2 minutes or until heated through.  Stir again very well.  Some bits of undissolved espresso or pumpkin spice might be at the bottom so you may not want to take that last sip.

I love that you told us about the traditions of cuppa and fika. They aren't terms I was familiar with before, and now I want to have both in my life on a daily basis! :) This latte looks so cozy and comforting. Perfect for when you need a little something midday when it's cold out. So convenient, too, that you don't even need to use a milk frother!

Easy peasey was the main point. They say necessity is the mother of inventions. I really need some caffeinated help in the afternoons that is quick and easy. Hope you enjoy it Amanda:)

I mean seriously, who even needs Starbucks? ;) This is such a great recipe to have up your sleeve. Especially on a chilly and rainy day when you don't want to leave the house, but need to curl up with a warming spiced beverage. I love how easy it is, too!

I'm so with you. I wish I could take a post lunch nap every single day. But, this quick pumpkin spice latte should help me be a little less grouchy about having to stay up. Great recipe!

Thanks Stef, I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels this way:)

I tend to be an espresso drinker myself (rather fond of that quote from Allais at the top of your article), but there's a certain undeniable warmth and charm that comes with pumpkin spices. And I'm 100% with you - North Americans definitely need to get on board with siesta/coffee/merienda/fika/cuppa culture. I mean, there's a reason that most of the world does it - it's awesome!

My thoughts exactly Sean, beautifully said. Thank you!

Why spend money at the coffee shop when you can make a pumpkin spice latte at home? I very much like your tradition of taking a little mid-afternoon break. That's exactly when you need a little pick-me-up and maybe a chat. Since I don't have a microwave, could I do it on the stovetop instead?

Yes, I've done that before with homemade chai, just stir often so the milk doesn't burn. Enjoy!
