“Coffee is a beverage that puts one to sleep when not drank.” – Alphonse Allais
Every afternoon of every day I have a choice, eat lunch and get sleepy or skip it and live with hunger.
The American culture doesn’t recognize the need for a siesta after lunch. This is a great marketing opportunity for Starbucks, they have a Happy Hour rewards program if you buy a beverage in the morning and come back after 3pm.
I do indulge in a siesta whenever my schedule allows. It is not always possible though and that is where my afternoon high tea comes in. Before 4pm I indulge in either a cuppa or a fika.
Cuppa is literally a cup of tea, often times with friends. A fika is a Swedish coffee break, often times with friends. The idea behind both the cuppa and the fika is the same. An afternoon pick-me-up when energy levels are low. If you have good company to share in this daily ceremony, then it’s even a more merrier event than partaking solo. Solo cuppa and fika have their place too. Consider it a 15 minute mini meditation time.
I am sharing my recent invention with you friends. It takes two minutes, a coffee mug and a microwave.
You will need to mix up some Pumpkin Spice beforehand but this is easy and will make your fika simple and delicious.

Homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte in Two Minutes
How to make your own signature Pumpkin Spice Latte, espresso and milk highlighted by flavor notes of pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove to create this incredible beverage that's a fall favorite. No espresso maker, milk frother, or special syrups required.
Ingredients
- 1 Tbs of instant espresso powder
- 1/4 tsp pumpkin spice
- 1.5 cups of milk (365g), or enough to fill your coffee mug. I use 2% but you can use whatever you want.
- sugar as desired, I use 1 tsp but you could use more if you like a sweet latte
Instructions
- Place all ingredients in a coffee mug and stir well.
- Microwave on high for 1 1/2 minutes or until heated through. Stir again very well. Some bits of undissolved espresso or pumpkin spice might be at the bottom so you may not want to take that last sip.

I love that you told us about the traditions of cuppa and fika. They aren’t terms I was familiar with before, and now I want to have both in my life on a daily basis! 🙂 This latte looks so cozy and comforting. Perfect for when you need a little something midday when it’s cold out. So convenient, too, that you don’t even need to use a milk frother!

Easy peasey was the main point. They say necessity is the mother of inventions. I really need some caffeinated help in the afternoons that is quick and easy. Hope you enjoy it Amanda:)

I mean seriously, who even needs Starbucks? 😉
This is such a great recipe to have up your sleeve. Especially on a chilly and rainy day when you don’t want to leave the house, but need to curl up with a warming spiced beverage. I love how easy it is, too!

Exactly Dana!

I’m so with you. I wish I could take a post lunch nap every single day. But, this quick pumpkin spice latte should help me be a little less grouchy about having to stay up. Great recipe!
Tina says
Thanks Stef, I’m glad I’m not the only one that feels this way:)

I tend to be an espresso drinker myself (rather fond of that quote from Allais at the top of your article), but there’s a certain undeniable warmth and charm that comes with pumpkin spices. And I’m 100% with you – North Americans definitely need to get on board with siesta/coffee/merienda/fika/cuppa culture. I mean, there’s a reason that most of the world does it – it’s awesome!
Tina says
My thoughts exactly Sean, beautifully said. Thank you!

Why spend money at the coffee shop when you can make a pumpkin spice latte at home? I very much like your tradition of taking a little mid-afternoon break. That’s exactly when you need a little pick-me-up and maybe a chat. Since I don’t have a microwave, could I do it on the stovetop instead?
Tina says
Yes, I’ve done that before with homemade chai, just stir often so the milk doesn’t burn. Enjoy!

Yummm, I love how gorgeous and easy this recipe is. There’s nothing better than a pumpkin latte in the fall and winter months. This one’s a keeper…just pinned!

AMAZING. I’m so with you about needing that siesta! My lunches are usually really light because otherwise I will get sooooo sleepy. But I’ve usually already bought coffee in the am so I don’t want to buy another in the afternoon. No need, now!! You just saved me hundreds of dollars… ha!

I would love a cuppa or a fika, since an afternoon siesta is as elusive as bigfoot in these parts. I’ve only had a Starbuck’s pumpkin spice latte once in my life — and to be honest, I didn’t even order it — they were handing out samples. I found it too sweet and cloying, but your recipe — with REAL ingredients looks like one I can really indulge in. No weird syrups – just the good stuff.

You had me at two minutes! I love a good pumpkin spice latte so making it at home is always a plus! This is going to be tested out ASAP in my kitchen.
Tina says
I needed something quick and easy and this really works for me. Hope you like it like I do Carmy:)

This post is calling my name. I am a PUMPKIN fanatic. I have been known to make pumpkin lattes ANY time of year. This recipe sounds fantastic….and saves a lot of money at Starbucks.

I love how versatile it is and how easy it is to get canned pumpkin. The possibilities are endless!
Tina says
What a delicious way to spend a cuppa or fika with friends! I had never heard of those traditions and I can see I’ve been missing out! Thanks for the simple way to enjoy one of favorite Fall treats any time of the year!

Hope you have a wonderful Fika or cuppa Tina!

What a tasty little afternoon pick me up. I’m totally making this tomorrow. Love the spices and the simplicity and I can’t wait to taste this. It’s cool here already so this warm drink is definitely going to hit the spot.
Tina says
Thanks Debra, I am really loving this kitchen hack. It’s made my afternoons so pleasant.

I always wondered if I could do this at home. I spend too much money at coffee shops. I do love the way they make lattes though. I just wish there was an easier solution that doesn’t break the bank. Thanks for this! Definitely going to try this.
