I really enjoy reaching into a bag of homemade popsicles that I made myself.  It’s comforting to know what is in my dessert.  In the case of the Summer Popsicle Series it’s healthy ingredients.  Now when I reach for a cold, refreshing dessert on a hot Summer day, I can enjoy it more without the guilt of indulging.

Today I am sharing with you frozen fruit and yogurt pops.  Freezing fruit and yogurt makes this too easy.  In a 1:1 ratio with yogurt and fruit you can have a popsicle mixture whipped up in no time.  I have tried this with both fat-free and regular yogurt and also with vanilla or plain.  I like them all.  You do get a little more creaminess that is barely perceptible with the regular yogurt versus the fat free.  With the vanilla yogurt, the popsicles come out a bit sweeter.  If you want to make this Syn Free, be sure to use plain, fat free yogurt and you will be good to go.

Healthy Popsicle Making Tips

  • If you want creamier popsicles, use yogurt or add a banana.
  • If you want sweeter popsicles, use vanilla yogurt or add honey, real maple syrup or agave syrup.
  • Freezing mutes the flavors, make stronger tasting popsicles by adding more of the ingredient you want to come through.
  • Run the popsicle mold under hot running water for 30 seconds to help them ‘pop-out’.
  • Let your popsicle rest for a few minutes before eating, it will taste better and be easier to eat if your popsicle is a lower temperature.

Who invented the popsicle?

When scoring a popsicle from the ice cream truck did you ever wonder who first invented it?  Me neither,  I was too distracted by sugar to be that curious but I have the answer anyways.  In 1905 11 year old Frank Epperson accidentally left his cup of powdered soda, water and a stick on the front porch.  As it froze overnight, the first popsicle was born.

Frank debuted his invention at a park in Alameda, California.  He called it the ‘Epsicle’ but later, his children talked him into changing it to Popsicle, as they nicknamed them Pop’s’sicle anyways.

Be popsicle inspired!  Make your own, go crazy:)

Happy popsicling everybody!
