Easy Tzatziki Sauce

A simple and easy 5-minute yogurt sauce also known as Raita, Tzatziki Sauce or Chachik.  A cool sauce that will complement any spicy dish.  Popular in Greece and India, this amazing Greek cucumber yogurt sauce is perfect balance to those robust dishes from abroad.

If you start delving into exotic cuisine from India, the Middle East and the Mediterranean and you will come across a familiar, delicious yogurt sauce.  In India it is known as Raita, some middle eastern countries calls it Chachik and the Greeks call it Tzatziki Sauce.

This is a bare bones, easy, everyday version with just 5 ingredients.  I LOVE using this as a condiment to spicy dishes from any country.  The cooling effect compliments the fiery goodness from some of the best cuisine.  I highly encourage you to keep some on hand at all times if you are delving into spicy recipes regularly.

I originally made this Tzatziki sauce Gyros. Since then I have used it for other dishes such as Venison Burritos where the tangy yogurt sauce complimented this game meat burrito.

Easy Everyday Yogurt Sauce

Yield: 3 cups
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 10 minutes

A simple and easy 5-minute yogurt sauce also known as Raita, Tzatziki or Chachik. A cooling sauce that will complement any spicy dish.  Popular in Greece and India, this amazing Greek cucumber yogurt sauce is perfect balance to those robust dishes from abroad.

Ingredients

  • 1 hothouse or english cucumber, peeled and diced
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 onion, peeled and diced (I prefer red onions)
  • juice of 1 lemon
  • 2 cloves of garlic, peeled and minced
  • 2 cups Greek style yogurt
  • Optional: 1/4 cup fresh herb of choice (dill, oregano, thyme, cilantro, chives etc)

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, add diced cucumber and sprinkle with the salt, set aside.
  2. While the cucumber is resting with the salt, prepare your other ingredients.
  3. Add the remaining ingredients, stir and refrigerate.  This sauce can be used immediately but the flavor does get better with time.

Notes

  • This is great with most spice dishes, especially if served with flatbread.
  • Herbs are optional but gives you a chance to personalize this sauce to your taste and to the meal you are going to serve it with.

Tzatziki is one of my favourite sauces/dips. But I have never put red onion in it! Can't wait to try this addition :D

That's funny Claire, I am sort of addicted to red onion. I put it in a lot of things.

Mmmm! I love tzatziki sauce and how easy it is to make. I love using it as a dip for pitas and veggies and, of course, in gyros!

Hey Marie, Gyros is how I first tried the sauce. Pita chips would be great too! You gave me some ideas, enjoy!
