Canned Sardine Bowl Recipe

Inspired by my trip to Japan and my love of kimchi, this canned sardine bowl recipe is one of my favorite go-to lunch recipes. Flavor is packed in at every step, using classic Japanese ingredients like Furikake, Kewpie mayo and mushroom soy sauce.

What I love about this recipe?

  • Sardines- I love the convenience of canned fish, and sardines are one of those omega 3-packed gems that we should really eat more often. It has much lower mercury levels than tuna. Look for the Marine Stewardship Council certification on the label or purchase sardines caught in Japan or Morocco for sustainability reasons.
  • Easy- If you have ever made tuna or chicken salad, you can make this recipe. It’s just a chop and mix situation. I am serving this with rice and kimchi.
  • Healthy- For the reasons above and also if you choose to eat this with kimchi, your gut will be delighted with the fermented cabbage, a double win.

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes

An easy and healthy canned fish recipe that whips up in minutes.

Ingredients

  • 3.75 oz canned sardines
  • 1/4 cup diced red onion
  • 1 cup chopped cilantro
  • 1 TBS lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup chopped bread & butter pickles
  • 1/4 cup Kewpie mayo
  • 1 Tbs dijon mustard
  • GARNISH Furikake, mushroom soy sauce

Instructions

  1. Mix the ingredients in a bowl. Chop up the sardines into bite-sized pieces while mixing.
  2. Serve with cooked rice of your choice and store-bought kimchi.
  3. Garnish as desired

Notes

  • You may substitute other types of pickles but the bread & butter pickles add a note of unexpected sweetness.
  • You may sub in your favorite mayo if you don't have Kewpie. Do give Kewpie a try, it is THE best. You can find it in most Asian markets or online.
  • Any mustard will work, I just love dijon on everything.
  • You can substitute your herb of choice, my favorite for meat salads is cilantro or scallions.
