How to make homemade bread from scratch.

A friend once told me of a great cheater method that took all of the work out of homemade yeast breads.  She received this little pearl of wisdom from a friend of hers.  The earth-shattering secret we never heard of?  The bread machine.

No kidding.  Most of us know of somebody who bought an expensive bread machine only to discover, it made a square block of golden brown bread that wasn’t fully cooked in the middle.  Eww…

This little issue means that second hand stores have these expensive bread machines, in abundance, for only $10.  They are almost brand new because really, they have only been used once or twice.

The little known secret is that bread machines are great at doing the hard work for you, with it’s dough setting.  All you have to do is place all of the ingredients in the machine, close the hatch and press start.  The machine kneads, proofs and rests the dough for you.  At the end of the cycle, you just plop it onto a baking sheet or in a loaf pan and bake.  That’s IT!  All of the hard work is done for you and you can bake the loaf as normal, in a real oven.  Have you ever heard of this?  Am I the only person to not know this?  Leave a comment and let us know your favorite cheater techniques.

If you want to level up your easy baking, grind your own flour in high speed blender.  A very healthy, fresh alternative to using older flour on the shelf whose vitamins have degraded.

I hope this inspires you to visit your local second-hand store and grab one of those red-hot deals on bread machines.

Tips on how to keep homemade bread fresh

Wrap it in plastic and keep it on the counter at room temperature for up to two days.  If for some reason you still have bread, place it in a freezer bag and freeze for up to six months.  Homemade bread goes very fast so I don’t anticipate this being a problem.  The bread doesn’t have preservatives so it can mold very quickly.  You can also keep this in the fridge.

To serve, bring to room temperature.  I like to toast homemade bread and slather butter on it with homemade jam.  We are lucky enough to have access to a fruit orchard, thanks to the farmer.  I usually make one or two batches of preserves every year so I like to make bread.

This makes a great snack or a side for breakfast or dinner.  For breakfast I would serve this along side some eggs.  For dinner just put a pat of butter on it.

What a great idea! I don't have a bread machine, but I love making bread. I usually just mix it with the dough hook in my kitchen aid, which works great!
