My Secrets to a Minimalist Christmas

I don’t know about y’all, but my Christmas season is super busy.  Working in the medical field, my December is filled with flu, croup, crud and overtime.  This means even less time and definitely less energy for decorating, shopping, baking and all normal activities associated with Christmas.  I have simplified this season with a few ninja moves and saved my sanity.

I have pared down my Christmas decorations down to a small Christmas tree that comes together in 5 minutes, pre-strung with lights, 2 stockings and a wall hanging my sister-in-law made us.  Add a few cinnamon-y candles and the mood is set.  This all takes maybe 20 minutes tops!

I also try to streamline my Christmas baking by making a large jar of Christmas Mince which I can add to a basic cookie,  quick bread or pie without too much fuss or shopping.

By shopping online, preferably Etsy, gifts are delivered right to my door.  Ready to be wrapped.

The pared down Christmas activities have not diminished my Christmas spirit.  In fact, it has made it more meaningful by giving me more time to spend with the people I love and volunteer at the local homeless shelter.  My daughter and I occasionally volunteer at the shelter when she comes home from college.  A little Mommy time never hurt a fledging adult.

Tips for a simple Christmas

  1. Potluck your Christmas dinner.  Your job is to host, serve the main dish and beverages.  Let your guests bring the sides and desserts.  Make a sign up roster.  Dinner is done.
  2.  Use disposable plates.  They make really nice ones and you can dress up your table with nice flatware and cloth napkins that you can just toss in the laundry.  I know this isn’t for everyone but can you imagine the easy clean up?
  3. Be happy with ‘good enough’.  Leave perfection at the door.
Write up a Christmas e-mail with pictures rather than filling out a bunch of Christmas cards.  It saves time and is eco-friendly.  Go easy on the mail person in your life.
  4. Learn to say no.  Or no thank you if you’re from the Midwest.  Don’t be a yes person during the holidays, it’s OK.  This was a hard lesson for me to learn.  I didn’t want my family and friends to be mad at me or disappointed.  Guess what?  They weren’t.
  5. Delegate.  Enlist your spouse or sibling for help, this will allow some quality time with the people you love.  Double bonus.
  6. Remember to have some holiday hygge in your life.  Get all of your stuff done early so you can enjoy long walks, read juicy novels and curl up with a hot cup of tea.

Christmas Mince Dumplings

This is so easy, it’s kind of embarrassing.  If you made the mince beforehand, all you need are the dumpling wrappers which you can find in the freezer section.

Christmas Mince is a sweet, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, fruit, citrus filling that is made ahead of time and improves with age.  I keep my jar in the fridge for the whole month of December but you can keep yours on the counter because this lovely invention is preserved with liquor and the acidity from the fruit and citrus.  It cooks up fast and a large batch is no problem.  Click here for the recipe.

Get creative with your dumpling wrapping skills.  Below are some pics of common dumpling wrapping techniques.  Certainly you can use these or come up with your own Christmas Ninja skills.

All that is left is to deep or pan fry, drain and sprinkle with powdered sugar.  This robust dessert is best served with ice cream, IMHO:)

Bon Appetit and Feliz Navidad!

Or Fröhliche Weinachten!

Notes

PRO TIPS

  • When you add food to hot oil for deep frying, it drops the temperature of the oil.  If the oil temperature drops too much the food will absorb the oil and become greasy/soggy.  To avoid this, keep the temperature up.  You can do this accurately by using a thermometer but you can also 'wing it'.  Place food in oil in small batches, don't crowd.  Every time you add food, increase the heat to high for a minute, wait a minute in between batches.  Any combination of these techniques should work for you.
  • This recipe can easily be scaled up, you have the huge jar of mince right?
  • Mince is a strong taste.  These dumplings are served well with some ice cream, yum!
